a step back...

We took a step in the waaay back machine, Mr Peabody:-), and went back to the early 1700's to visit Plimouth Colony. We had a blast listening to the townsfolk tell about their lives, and what they are doing to grow their community. The kids got to see other children playing traditional games, join in on helping to water a garden with a ceramic water jug, ask questions of an elderly man about his Bible, and visit an Indian village where we learned about weaving, making a dugout canoe, and try one out too. Favorite amongst the stops though was the crafts center, where each of them found something that totally fascinated them, Gabe stood and watched a man hand plane a board to make a chair leg, and brought home a batch of wood curls, Julianna could have stood and learned from the potter for hours, she was wowed by the way the woman took a lump and quickly formed it into a small pot, over and over again, Mia found the man making headdresses amazing, she found out about the types of berries used to dye deer hair, and how to stitch porcupine hairs in to form the woodpecker like crest. I found out about the art of card weaving, and since it looks easy we might try it, the woman giving the demo told us how to make our own cards and how to create patterns, it was easy, and had really cool results. So our step back in time was very productive and a fun learning experience, but apparently some things are not believable, Mia got a little Plimouth dolly, and when we got home she wanted to make her a home, so she started cutting doors and windows and a door in a shoe box, made a door handle out of a button, and then started to make a TV. I had to break the news to her that they did not have TV, or any electricity, or running water, etc, she got those things, but could not fathom the lack of TV, poor baby, we might need to make a closer study of history for that to become real for her :-)

All in all an awesome step back in time, and a fun day to hang out and just learn by doing, seeing, smelling, chasing(chickens), and talking to others, awesome day!!!!
